VOIP

Example

How we set up VOIP - using us, Aegis Security as example.
1) INCOMING telephone line remains the same: so clients ring 9763 1988
  • no change
2) We pay our existing telco for line rental.
  • No change - except that is now the sum total of your Telephone bill from your current Telco.    No outgoing call costs!
3) All OUTGOING telephone calls are routed through the VOIP unit.
4) The VOIP unit has its own independant telephone number 8700 0000 type.
5) Outgoing call are shown as Blank or Private so customers/clients will not ring back on VOIP line;
6) CALLS to other VOIP Engin holders = $NIL cost
7) CALLS routed through your VOIP to other land lines - 10c charge applies per call- no time limit
8) CALLS routed through your VOIP to mobiles phones - 29c charge applies per call- no time limit.
9) CALLS from your alarm system monitored by Aegis Security to our Control Room = $0 Cost - why, because we use VOIP now.

SIMPLE

Who should use VOIP?

  • All business & residential customers of Aegis Security;
  • People who talk to family & or friends several times a day;
  • Business with interstate offices;
  • Business with branch offices around the city, suburbs & State;
  • Business with satallite offices or people who work from home;  The telephone system becomes like an internal telephone system - no charges.
  • People who want enjoy lower telco costs;
  • Businesses that want to enjoy lower telco costs.

With VOIP the cost of running your home or business alarm system is reduced to the electricity used, and that is minimal!

For businesses the running costs of around $250-300 per annum for phone calls is slashed to $0. The cost of installing VOIP is essentially recouped after just one year BUT you get further savings on all outbound telephone calls attached to the line. $0.10c a call to any other land line not with our VOIP provider & 29c a minute to any mobile.

One of Melbourne's major girls & boys grammer schools with multiple campuses has just gone over to a VOIP system. Converting all lines to VOIP, nearly a 100 in total they so far estimate the savings to run into $500,000 per annum +!

For the homeowner with an alarm system, this is simply brilliant. We can now run an alarm system to its full capability with open and closes, daily line integrity tests, an alarm activations, all free. Currently such an operation is prohibitive to home owners as every activity such as turning the alarm system on is a phone call. Thats why we do not monitor open and closes on home alarms, just too expensive. Well now it isnt.

What is VOIP

Introduction

VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, or in more common terms phone service over the Internet.

If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection you can get your phone service delivered to you through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company.

Some people use VOIP in addition to their traditional phone service, since VOIP service providers usually offers lower rates than the traditional phone companies, but sometimes don't offer full service, phone directory listings etc.

The way we work the system is you keep your current telephone line and number & service provider be it Telstra, Optus etc, no change.

All incoming calls still come into your current number.

With VOIP unit on your line however, all OUTGOING telephone calls from your telephone are diverted through the VOIP unit. Result, you only pay your service provider for line rental!

Your VOIP unit has its own unique telephone number, but we dont want people ringing number so me block the number ID. Calls made to other VOIP units on our system cost $0, NIL, Zero, Nothing :) Calls to other telephones not on our VOIP system cost $0.10c or 29c to mobiles. International calls are just as cheap.

STOP. Do a comparison with your current telephone bill now.

1. Number of local calls. __________ 2. cost $________

3. Number of calls to mobiles ___________ 4. cost $________

5. Now take the number of local calls made (1) and multiply by 10c = $________

6. Number of calls to mobiles (3) multiplied by 29c = $_______________

Compare the costs of (2) $__________ v (5) $__________ = savings $_________

compare the costs of (4) $___________v (6) $__________ = savings $_________

Total the two savings to find out how much you save $_____________ x 12 months

= $________________________

How does VOIP work?

A way is required to turn analog phone signals into digital signals that can be sent over the Internet.
This function can either be included into the phone itself (See: VOIP Phones) or in a separate box like an ATA .

VOIP Using an ATA

Ordinary Phone ---- ATA ---- Ethernet ---- Router ---- Internet ---- VOIP Service Provider

VOIP connecting directly

It is also possible to bypass a VOIP Service Provider and directly connect to another VOIP user. However, if the VOIP devices are behind NAT routers, there may be problems with approach.

Why use VOIP?

There are two major reasons to use VOIP

  • Lower Cost
  • Increased functionality

Lower Cost

In general phone service via VOIP costs less than equivalent service from traditional sources. This is largely a function of traditional phone services either being monopolies or government entities. There are also some cost savings due to using a single network to carry voice and data. This is especially true when users have existing under-utilized network capacity that they can use for VOIP without any additional costs.

In the most extreme case, users see VOIP phone calls (even international) as FREE. While there is a cost for their Internet service, using VOIP over this service may not involve any extra charges, so the users view the calls as free. There are a number of services that have sprung up to facilitate this type of "free" VOIP call. Examples are: Free World Dialup and Skype for a more complete list see: VOIP Service Providers

Increased Functionality

VOIP makes easy some things that are difficult to impossible with traditional phone networks.

  • Incoming phone calls are automatically routed to your VOIP phone where ever you plug it into the network. Take your VOIP phone with you on a trip, and anywhere you connect it to the Internet, you can receive your incoming calls.
  • Call center agents using VOIP phones can easily work from anywhere with a good Internet connection.

G.P.R.S

General Packet Radio Service

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a mobile data service available to users of GSM mobile phones. It is often described as "2.5G", that is, a technology between the second (2G) and third (3G) generations of mobile telephony. It provides moderate speed data transfer, by using unused TDMA channels in the GSM network. Originally there was some thought to extend GPRS to cover other standards, but instead those networks are being converted to use the GSM standard, so that is the only kind of network where GPRS is in use. GPRS is integrated into GSM standards releases starting with Release 97 and onwards. First it was standardised by ETSI but now that effort has been handed onto the 3GPP.

What does GRPS mean for security users?

Answer: A greater degree of security. One of the weak links in your monitored alarm system is the relianance on a fixed telephone line link. If this link is cut, then the control room will never know about any alarm activities at your premises until you have missed 1 to 2 of our routine checks (which we conduct automatically in the wee small hours of the night)

A GPRS system means all alarm signals are sent over the wireless network.

No more telephone call costs from your alarm system unless the wireless network is down. The fixed line becomes a back up system to the wireless system.

Business users

Any business still on dialler system should seriously consider moving over to GPRS.

This offers a similiar service to the expensive Telstra service called Securitel. The great advantage is that if the telephone line is cut to a securitel user, our control room will be advised of the line fault but will not know if the system has gone into alarm. GPRS will still send signals that can be received by our control room regardless of whether the telephone line has been cut.

Further, GPRS cuts the cost of doing business by reducing telephone call costs.

Home Owners

This system finally gives something that is affordable to all home alarm users. The huge advantage is we can now set your system up to record the arming and disarming of your alarm system. Normally we don't do this for home alarm system for reasons of cost. Under the fixed line system every signal sent to the control room is a telephone call to our control room. If you come and go from your home this could end up costing you 10-14 telephone calls per day, a very expensive proposition.

Because GPRS uses wireless network we can set up opens and closes.

This gives our control room operators the advantage of being able to see exactly what is going on at your home.

When we ring we will be able to advise if anyone has turned the alarm off etc, something we had to check on the actual signals received rather than on the front alarm screen.
