security guards
This page last updated 12th February 2007 SECURITY GUARDS Aegis Security provides licensed, trained, uniformed or plain clothes Security Officers in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia & West Australia for:
Why use Aegis Security Officers? Aegis Security provides contract security officers for your business. There are 2 types of guard forces. 1. Proprietary and 2. Contract. Every business needs to assess the best choice of security service to fulfil your institutions needs. Generally the advantages of one type are the disadvantages of the other. The advantages and disadvantages should be evaluated against the organisations needs and ability to pay. The great advantage of using Aegis Security guards is that we will work hard to minimse the disadvantages - read further the disadvantages of contract security and how we have the plan to replace the dis in disadvantage. Proprietory guard services: inhouse guards. People selected, recruited and trained by the proprietor. In house guard services require "maintaining effective control of operations" while choosing contract guards will "necessitte comprehensive and continuous monitoring of the contract" Some organisations use a combination of the two types of service. Example: Telstra Dome, Docklands, Melbourne. Has both proprietary and contract guards. Proprietary guards work in the more high profile areas such as dressing rooms, corporate areas and all non event day security. Contract guards are used more for access control operations during events and crowd control of general public areas. The exact number of contract guards is flexible and driven by sales and expected sales.
Advantages of contract security generally include lower overall cost, reduced administration, a flexible response to changing guard needs, not having to worry about covering absentism and annual leave of proprietary guard force. Disadvantages of contract security can include: possiblility of higher turnover of guards, issues related to contract, inadequate training. We at Aegis Security can alleviate these problems through:
TrainingAll our Security Officers conform to our seventy (70) plus page Security Operations Manual which defines the Standard Operating Procedures for all Aegis Personnel. In addition at each permanent site we develop in conjunction with client management our "Post Orders" manual which defines exactly what the officers are to do and when, the client standards to be adhered to and maintained and necessary site emergency information. Together these two documents ensure our staff can maintain and exceed client expectations. Further, our Senior Security Officers & Supervisors are guided by our "Senior Security Officers Manual" which gives advice, assistance and ideas to our on site leaders to implement and develop a truly effective security unit for our clients benefit. Promotion and pay rises within our organisation (outside of award increases) are based on an Officers knowledge and implementation of the Security Operations manual. Why is a 70+ page security operations manual important? To Aegis Security it encapsulates our whole ethos in providing a security service. Further they are the building block for providing a quality security service to our customers. Respected U.S. security author Dennis Dalton in his book Security Management - Business Strategies for Success 1995 Butterworth Heinemann explains that written policies and procedures are the first step in the "Looping Asset Protection Model" which is shown below. The 3 P's are Policies, Practices and Procedures. As Dalton explains (truly we would love to print the whole book for it is such a reference for both security professionals and clients) "The business of corporate security is about control. Since an organisation's success is dependant, in part, on its ability to protect its assets, we can say that security's primary mission is to be the catalyst for control. The style of control is another matter. Controlling can, and should be, defined within the broader context of customer service... the important point is that security's roles is defined within a framework of developing and administring those controls necessary to assure protection of valued assets. It is therefore, not suprising that the beginning and ending of the loop depends on the dynamics of control. (The 3P's are)the basic building blocs for the entire program, they spell out management's expectations regarding the movement of people and property. Policymaking sets parameters for employees, contractors and suppliers and becomes a 'public record' for investors, customers, and visitors to explain why certain practices and procedures are in place. Policies serve to give security its license to establish corresponding operational practices and procedures." Dalton, Page 20. We hope this explains why at Aegis Security we have a Security Operations Manual, a Briefing Officers manual, a Supervisors manual and Post Orders for every major guard post. Administring Security "The actual staffing, equipping and deploying functions, all matters directly affected by the amount of budgetary commitment approved by senior (client) management (to protect their assets)" Dalton Page 21. "Simply put, the ability to carry out executive management's intent is dependent on the type and degree of the security infrastructure put into place." Dalton Pg 21. This section is affected by the amount of staff deployed, the type or types of communication equipment supplied or required, CCTV, alarm systems, access control systems, the amount of time allowed to brief (train new staff on equipment) and the amount of time allowed for supervision visits. Each of these, when balanced with labour needs, defines the operational aspects of the security program. Further, Security Officers may be expected to provide first aid, visitor assistance & conceirge type services all requiring certain level of staff and support equipment. It is important to understand that preventative security is defined within the context of its officers patrolling, cameras detecting, alarms monitoring and trainers instructing. In short, prevention is an active part of the securit program. It is essential...to make everyone aware of the active nature of asset protection through preventative measures." Dalton Pg 22.
Preventative security. Incident Response "Security's measure of effectiveness is demonstrated by its ability to respond quickly and professionally."

Communication and Reports |
In today's litigation happy world you need Aegis Security staff, as opposed to most other security firms to help protect your business against unnecessary and expensive litigation.
Our Security Operations Manual and Post Orders provide written evidence of expected standards of performance and action.
Our Senior Security Operations manual describes how we implement and maintain our standards across all shifts, day, night, weekends and public holidays.
Does your current security provider have these necessary documents or are you accepting a greater liability for their action?
If you have IN HOUSE security staff are they given any written instructions?
Does anyone check up on them at night or weekends? Who do they call if they have a problem?
With an increasing emphasis on Occupational Health and Safety and senior management been given the responsibility to ensure all staff are safe, can you afford not to have Aegis Security manage or provide a consultancy support to your business?
Our rates cover wages, superannuation, workcare, uniform and communication equipment costs etc needed to employee a Security Officer at your location.
The rate can be affected by your need for a guard at day, night, weekends and or public holidays.
The type of work the guard will be required to undertake. Essentially using computers and holding keys and performing a lock up function entitle the guard to a higher rate of pay which is reflected in our rates.
The number of hours each day or night the guard is required to work. Generally a minium of four (4) hours is required per shift, and a minimum charge of (4) hours will be charged for work under (4) hours. Unless a prior arrangement has been made with a current client.
At Aegis we will take into account all these factors and can usually come up with an all encompassing competitive hourly rate. Easier for account management than having loads of different rates for each different time or day.
Maybe a door lock has failed or the security alarm system is not working or you have suffered a break in or act of god through the night or weekend leaving your premises vulnerable to anyone. Call Aegis Security, we can have a Security Guard out to your premises to protect the building until your staff arrive for work the next day or after the weekend.
We need to know some basic information to assess the correct type of guard to send and advise them (the guard) of all the information they need to make their work a success for you.
the exact address with nearest cross street where the guard is to work
will the guard be working inside, outside, in their car, is there car parking available?
what type of work will the guard be doing? Will they be guarding a property at night till staff arrive, checking cars and or visitors and staff in and out of a building?
the date & time the guard is expected to work
the date & time the guard is expected to finish work
will the guard report to anyone or meet anyone at the start of the shift?
the name and contact phone numbers of at least two members of your staff to phone in case of emergency.
will the guard be required in uniform or tuxedo or non uniform casual or suit?
will the guard have access to toilets, tea and coffee?
will the guard need a key? who can they collect it from, do they need an alarm code and who can provide the code?
